Summary
Despite being a high-profile prospect coming out of high school and a year later when he was drafted, Mudiay has not lived up to that reptuation after five years in the NBA. Despite his size that made him intriguing as a point guard, he has not been able to defend at a high level. He also hasn't developed the ability to carve up defenses with his passing, which was supposed to be his calling card entering the NBA.
Mudiay had some good moments for the Jazz this season, outperforming most people's expectations. His eFG% was above average for his position for the first time in his career, according to Cleaning the Glass. Mudiay may not be a threat from behind the arc, but he's solid at creating midrange jumpshots for himself, and hit them at a great rate this past season. There's a chance that he played well enough to warranty more than a minimum contract, but with the depth at point guard in the league, Mudiay may once again have to settle for a minimum contract.
Cap Considerations
Mudiay will be an unrestricted free agent with a $1.6 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. This means that the highest starting salary the Jazz could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $2.3 million. This could be enough to retain Mudiay, since he settled for the minimum of $1.7 million to come to Utah. Alternatively, the Jazz could use their Mid-Level Exception or Bi-Annual Exception to re-sign Mudiay if he demands more than $2.3 million.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Mudiay as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer, or Room Mid-Level Exceptions to sign him. Since he signed a minimum contract this summer, teams will hope to get him at the minimum next summer too.
Potential Teams: Hawks, Jazz, Hornets, Thunder, Heat
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.9 million ($1.7 million cap hit) with the Hawks
Actual Contract: N/A
As of the start of the regular season, Mudiay remains unsigned.
