Summary
Miller will almost certainly be waived by the Pelicans before the '20'-21 season, as he is likely to miss the entire '19-'20 season after tearing his Achilles. After turning a couple years of solid shooting from outside into a good contract last summer, teams interested in Miller will be hopeful that he return to form and continue to hit shots after he recovers. At age 30 and coming off a torn Achilles, I would be surprised if Miller is able to get anything above the minimum next summer.
Cap Considerations
Miller's $6.8 million salary for 2020-2021 is non-guaranteed, so he may be waived by the Pelicans in order increase their cap space. If they waive Miller, they will have no form of his Bird rights, and would have to use cap space (if they operate under the cap), or their Mid-Level Exception or Bi-Annual Exception (if they operate over the cap) to re-sign him, or he would need to return on a minimum contract.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Miller as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer, or Room Mid-Level Exceptions to sign him.
Potential Teams: Heat, Mavericks, 76ers, Celtics, Bulls
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2 million ($1.6 million cap hit) with the Heat
Actual Contract: Not waived ($7 million)
Miller got a gift this offseason, as his salary became guaranteed in order to facilitate his trade to OKC as part of the Steven Adams deal.
