Summary

Lee is a three-and-D wing that is not particularly great at either of those aspects. While Lee shot above 40% from three in '16-'17 and '17-'18, it was on a somewhat low volume of attempts, and he doesn't have the reputation as a shooter to really scare defenses. Lee also isn't big enough to defend the elite wings in today's game.

Lee is 35 years old, so teams will be worried about how much quality play he has let. After missing most of the '18-'19 season with injuries, Lee only played sparingly in the early parts of this past season, but started to get more minutes and played well before the shutdown in March. However, Lee will miss the playoffs due to a calf injury, so he won't have any more chances to improve his stock before free agency.

Cap Considerations

Lee will be an unrestricted free agent with a $19.1 million cap hold and full Bird rights. Since the Mavericks are likely to remain over the cap next summer, they could use the full $9.8 million Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception to sign free agents, and use Bird Rights to re-sign Lee.

If the Mavericks renounce Lee to remove his cap hold and operate under the salary cap, they could only bring him back using that cap space (virtually certain to not happen since the whole point of renouncing him would be to use that cap space to sign another free agent), the $4.8 million Room MLE, or on a minimum contract.

Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Lee as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer, or Room Mid-Level Exceptions to sign him. There's also the possibility that Lee does not get any offers above the minimum this offseason.

Potential Teams: 76ers, Heat, Mavericks, Thunder, Pelicans

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.6 million ($1.6 million cap hit) with the 76ers

Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.6 million (non-guaranteed) with the Mavericks.

Lee signed a non-guaranteed minimum contract with the Mavericks, but was waived prior to the start of the regular season.
