Summary

Kaminsky missed the majority of the season due to a fractured kneecap. He only played in 32 games this season before the season was suspended - not ideal for what likely end up being a contract year for Kaminsky. I expect the Suns to decline Kaminsky's team option for the '20-'21 season.

Teams looking for a stretch big on a cheap contract will be interested in Kaminsky, who can contribute on the offensive end when he's healthy. Kaminsky has shot well from three over the past three seasons, especially on non-corner 3's, shooting 35% or better from this area each of the past three seasons. That allows Kaminsky to be a legitimate threat as a pick-and-pop big. However, defenses can often switch that action without worrying about Kaminsky taking advantage of smaller defenders.

While Kaminsky has theoretical post skills developed from his time in college, he has never finished above average at the rim in any of his five seasons, according to Cleaning the Glass. Add those struggles to Kaminsky's poor defensive abilities, and it leads to a player that is no more than a third big, at best.

Cap Considerations

Kaminsky has a $5.0 million team option for 2020-2021, and if that option is declined he will be an unrestricted free agent with an $5.7 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. Since the Suns will only have his Non-Bird rights, they will be somewhat limited in their means of re-signing him. The most they could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is a contract starting at $5.7 million, unless they use cap space to re-sign him. However, if the Suns decline his option this means they likely won't have interest in-resigning Kaminsky.

Teams other than the Suns will have multiple ways to sign Kaminsky, as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer, or Room Mid-Level Exceptions to sign him.

Potential Teams: Nets, Jazz, Pistons, Magic, Trailblazers

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $4 million with the Nets

Actual Contract: 1-year, $1.9 million (non-guaranteed) with the Kings

After signing a non-guaranteed minimum contract, Kaminsky was waived by the Kings prior to the start of the regular season, but was claimed off waivers by Phoenix, where he may be able to stick around for the season.
