Summary

Green's willingness to shoot more threes in recent seasons has helped his efficiency, as he shot a respectable 36% from three in '18-'19, leading to the highest points per shot attempt of his career, according to Cleaning the Glass. However, Green struggled this past season in Utah, where he was eventually waived before signing with the Rockets, where he contributed more than most people could have expected.

Green has only signed minimum contracts in the last couple years, but may have earned himself some more money with his performance in the playoffs. Once players sign a minimum-contract, it can be sometimes be difficult shake the reputation of being a "minimum guy", but Green might have done that with his play for the Rockets. Green had transitioned to being a small-ball four in recent years, and his role went even further playing as a small-ball five for Houston.

The Rockets had some success in the playoffs running inverted Green-Harden pick-and-rolls with Green as the ball-handler. Green also showed more willingness to defend and rebound. With the league going smaller, I expect Green to get some interest as a small-ball big.

Cap Considerations

Green will be an unrestricted free agent with a $1.6 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. This means that the highest starting salary the Rockets could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $3.1 million. This could be enough to retain Green, since he settled for the minimum of $2.6 million last summer. Alternatively, the Rockets could use their Mid-Level Exception or Bi-Annual Exception to re-sign Green if he demands more than $3.1 million.

Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Green as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer, or Room Mid-Level Exceptions to sign him. Since he signed a minimum contract last offseason, teams will hope to get him at the minimum this offseason too.

Potential Teams: Rockets, Nets, Lakers, Warriors, Trailblazers

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $3.1 million with the Rockets

Last updated: 12/31/2020

Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.6 million ($1.6 million cap hit) with the Nets

I thought Green's playoff performance could get him a little more than the minimum, especially if he returned to Houston, but him signing a minimum contract with the Nets was not surprising.
