Summary
Hill spent the majority of the '17-'18 and '18-'19 seasons injured, making him as close to dead salary as possible after signing a four-year, $52 million contract in 2016. At that time, Hill showed potential as a wing that could play some small-ball four as he had the size and strength to defend multiple positions. However, due to injuries and Hill being unable to consistently hit shots from anywhere on the floor, Hill is no longer a rotation-level NBA player. Hill played better than expected during his time in Memphis this season, even hitting a respectable 37% from three during that time.
Cap Considerations
Hill will be an unrestricted free agent with full Bird rights. As his cap hold ($19.2 million) greatly exceeds the salary he will get in free agency, his cap hold is not really relevant. The Heat will almost certainly go into the summer prepared to renounce Hill and remove his cap hold in order to maximize their cap space.
If the Heat want to bring Hill back, they can certainly do so with the potential cap space they will have available (if Hill only signs for the minimum, they will not need cap space to bring him back). Alternatively, they could potentially use all their cap space and have the Room Mid-Level Exception of $4.8 million to bring back Hill if his market is higher than the minimum.
Teams other than the Heat will have multiple ways to sign Hill as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer, or Room Mid-Level Exceptions to sign him. I would also not be surprised if Hill can only get the minimum next summer.
Potential Teams: Trailblazers, Thunder, Warriors, Mavericks, Hornets
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.2 million ($1.6 million cap hit) with the Trailblazers
Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.2 million (non-guaranteed) with the Hawks
Hill only signed a non-guaranteed minimum contract with Atlanta, but it looks like he has a good chance of staying on the roster through the season.
