Summary
Grant has expanded his game in recent years, even hitting 40% from three the last two seasons. However, it's on a relatively low volume of attempts, and in the playoffs teams will be willing to live with Grant taking those shots. Grant has also developed more of an off-the-dribble game, able to attack off close-outs and finish at the rim.
On defense, Grant has the lateral quickness to stay with guards on the perimeter, and the length and athleticism to provide some rim protection. He was often tasked with guarding the best opposing wing. Due to his versatility on both ends, Grant can fit in well with most teams, and I expect the Nuggets to prioritize re-signing him this summer. If Grant does not have interest in returning to Denver, I expect there to be multiple big offers for him.
Cap Considerations
Grant has a $9.7 million player option for 2020-20201 that he is likely to decline. If Grant does opt out, he will be an unrestricted free agent with a $17.1 million cap hold and full Bird rights. Since the Nuggets will almost certainly be operating over the salary cap, they will retain Grant's Bird rights, and have no restrictions on re-signing him.
However, the luxury tax will certainly be a concern, as spending heavily on retaining their free agents could cost the Nuggets heavily in luxury tax penalties. Therefore, other teams will have a legitimate shot at signing Grant away from Denver. The full 4-year MLE would be 4-years and $39.8 million, which may be enough to get Grant. However, if Grant demands a starting salary of more than the full $9.3 million Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, only teams with cap space will be able to sign him. If Grant and an over-the-cap team have mutual interest, sign-and-trade options can be explored.
Potential Teams: Nuggets, Heat, Pelicans, Suns, Wizards
Predicted Contract: 3-year, $45 million with the Nuggets
Actual Contract: 3-year, $60 million with the Pistons
Grant signed one of the surprise contracts of the offseason, as I didn't epect Detroit to throw that kind of big money on a player like Grant.
