Summary

Gibson will only become a free agent if he is waived by the Knicks before the '20-'21 season. Despite expanding his range and adding the corner three to his arsenal in recent seasons, Gibson is still mostly a non-stretch center, which makes his fit in New York non-ideal. However, that didn't stop the Knicks from signing him last summer.

If Bobby Portis leaves in free agency, the Knicks will still have Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson as their bigs, both who are best suited at center in today's game, and neither of which are a threat from outside. Gibson could be a third big to fit in the rotation behind Randle and Robinson, but getting additional shooting around R.J. Barrett should be the priority this offseason.

Despite having positional intelligence that makes him a solid defender, Gibsonis not a great rim protector and will struggle to defend on the perimeter as he ages further into his mid-thirties.

Cap Considerations

Gibson's $9.5 million salary for 2020-2021 has only $1 million guaranteed, so he may be waived by the Knicks in order increase their cap space. If they waive Gibson, they will have no form of his Bird rights, and would have to use cap space to re-sign him, or he would need to return on a minimum contract.

Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Gibson as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer, or possibly even the Room Mid-Level Exception to sign him.

Potential Teams: Trailblazers, Celtics, Raptors, Heat, Knicks

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $6 million with the Trailblazers

Actual Contract: N/A

As of the start of the regular season, Gibson remains unsigned.
