Summary

Ferrell's NBA role is quite clear - and that's to get buckets off the bench. However, it was not a good contract year for Ferrell, and his shooting percentages dipped below average and he started to fall out of the Kings' rotation.

Ferrell's size limits his ability to stop anyone on defense, which is likely one reason why the Kings signed Cory Joseph last summer to play behind De'Aaron Fox, as Joseph is one of the better defensive point guards in the league, especially among backups.

Ferrell's shooting ability and pick-and-rolls skills should keep him in the league, but he and his agent will have to convince teams he still is an above-average shooter if they're hoping to get anything above a minimum contract. As teams will likely view Ferrell as nothing more than  a third point guard, I would be surprised if he gets any offers above the minimum.

Cap Considerations

Ferrell will be an unrestricted free agent with a $3.9 million cap hold and Early Bird rights. If Ferrell is brought back using Early Bird rights rather than cap space, the Kings will be limited to paying him a starting salary of $9.3 million, which would be more than enough. If the Kings renounce Ferrell in order to remove his cap hold and increase their cap space (which is unlikely since the Kings will most likely be operating over the cap), they could only bring Ferrell back using all or part of the $4.8 million Room Mid-Level Exception, or on a minimum contract.

Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Ferrell as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer, or Room Mid-Level Exceptions to sign him. He could also potentially be had at the minimum salary.

Potential Teams: Hawks, 76ers, Raptors, Suns, Trailblazers

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.7 million ($1.6 million cap hit) with the Hawks

Actual Contract: 1-year, $1.7 million (non-guaranteed) with the Jazz.

Ferrell could not even get a guaranteed contract, and was waived before the regular season started.
