Summary
Ellington's one NBA skill is outside shooting, as the overwhelming majority of his field goal attempts come from beyond the three point line. Ellington can not only hit spot up threes, he's great off the catch and needs little room to get his shot off.
While I personally would love to see Ellington on a more competitive team, the rest of the league does not seem to value Ellington as much as I think they should, and it's likely due to him being fairly one-dimensional. If Ellington is not hitting shots, he's not contributing in other ways to compensate.
Cap Considerations
Ellington's $8 million salary for 2020-2021 has only $1 million guaranteed, so he may be waived by the Knicks in order increase their cap space. If they waive Ellington, they will have no form of his Bird rights, and would have to use cap space to re-sign him, or he would need to return on a minimum contract.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Ellington as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer, or possibly even the Room Mid-Level Exception to sign him.
Potential Teams: Knicks, Nuggets, 76ers, Warriors, Rockets
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $5 million with the Nuggets
Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.6 million ($1.6 million cap hit) with the Pistons
I would be willing to give Ellington a little more than the minimum, but admittedly I have always been higher on him than the league has been.
