Summary
Dotson has the potential to stick around in the NBA as a microwave scorer off the bench. Dotson has the athleticism and ball-handling ability to create shots for himself, while also being able to hit spotup jumpers. Dotson shot 37% from three the past two seasons.
Dotson does not have the size or defensive ability to contain the elite wings in the league, but as a scorer off the bench he can avoid those duties. He tends to force some shots, and takes a high number of long midrange jumpers, but he does hit them at a good rate. Plenty of teams need scoring off the bench, so if Dotson can provide that without taking too much off the table in other areas, he could be seen as an intriguing free agent next summer.
Cap Considerations
Dotson will be a restricted free agent with full Bird rights and a $2 million cap hold and Qualifying Offer. Having a low cap hold and full Bird rights could be beneficial for the Knicks, as they can keep his can hold on the books, use cap space to sign free agents, and then re-sign Dotson once they have used up all their cap space. If Dotson is brought back by the Knicks on a multi-year contract, they should frontload his contract as much as possible, especially since they could do so without losing any cap space.
Teams other than the Knicks will have multiple ways to sign Doston, as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer, Room Mid-Level Exceptions to sign him. However, Dotson being a restricted free agent will greatly lower his interest among teams, as they will worry that the only way to pry him away from New York would be to significantly overpay him.
Potential Teams: Knicks, Hornets, Grizzlies, Cavaliers, Raptors
Predicted Contract: 2-year, $8 million with the Knicks
Actual Contract: 2-year, $4 million with the Cavaliers.

I thought Dotson could get a little more, but this contract seems about right for someone that hasn't proven he can be a legitimate rotational piece yet
