Summary

Going into his age-24 season, Diallo will need to prove he belongs quickly, otherwise he may find himself playing basketball outside of the NBA. The former Kansas Jayhawk has not developed enough skill on offense to be a threat anywhere outside of the paint, where he finishes at a decent rate but does so on a small sample size.

On defense, Diallo doesn't have the positional awareness to be an effective rim protector. Without significantly developing on at least one side of the floor, it's unlikely Diallo will be getting much interest from NBA teams.

Cap Considerations

Diallo has a $1.8 million team option for 2020-2021, and if that option is declined he will be an unrestricted free agent with an $1.6 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. Since the Suns will only have his Non-Bird rights, they will be somewhat limited in their means of re-signing him. The most they could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is a contract starting at $2.1 million, but if they wanted to do that they wouldn't decline his option in the first place, thus making it a moot point. The Suns could also re-sign Diallo using cap space, but again that would seem illogical if they do decline his option.

Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Diallo as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer, or Room Mid-Level Exceptions to sign him. Since he signed a minimum contract last summer, teams will likely be able to get him at the minimum this summer too.

Potential Teams: Hornets, Suns, Wizards, Timberwolves, Trailblazers

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.7 million ($1.6 million cap hit) with the Hornets

Actual Contract: N/A

As of the start of the regular season, Diallo remains unsigned, and may need to improve his game outside of the NBA if he hopes to make it back.
