Summary
Carter-Williams had a bit of a revival in Orlando during the '19-'20 season. His finishing has improved, evidenced by his career high eFG%. His shooting stroke looks improved, but he is still well below-average, especially from outside the three point line. His size allows him to guard a range of perimeter players, giving his team some flexiblity in regards to who he can play next to. Going into his age-29 season, this might be MCW's best chance at a solid, semi long-term contract.
As he has essentially only played on minimum salary contracts since finishing his rookie contract in 2017, I would expect MCW to prioritize the most amount of guaranteed money available. If only lower, short-term contracts are available, MCW should focus on finding the best basketball situation for him. Otherwise, he could find himself on the fringes of NBA rosters from here on out.
Cap Considerations
Carter-Williams will be an unrestricted free agent with a $1.6 million cap hold and Early Bird rights. Since Carter-Williams's cap hold is only $1.6 million, the Magic could keep his cap hold on the books, use their remaining cap space to sign free agents (if they operate under the cap), and then bring Carter-Williams back using his Early Bird rights.
If MCW is brought back using Early Bird rights rather than cap space, the Magic will be limited to paying him a starting salary of up to 105% of the average salary this past season (roughly $10 million), which should be more than enough.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign MCW as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer, or Room Mid-Level Exceptions to sign him. He could also potentially be had at the minimum salary.
Potential Teams: Suns, Magic, Hawks, Pistons, Jazz
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $4 million with the Suns
Actual Contract: 2-year, $6.6 million with the Magic
Carter-Williams had his best season in a long time, and was able to turn it into an above-minimum contract.
