Summary
Caboclo finally started to show some flashes of competent play in the '18-'19 season with the Grizzlies. His outside shot looked much improved, and he hit threes at a decent rate. On defense, Caboclo is able to use his length to block shots, and also rebounded at a good rate in the '18-'19 season.
However, Caboclo was unable to get minutes for the Grizzlies this season, and was traded to Houston at the trade deadline, where he was also unable to get minutes. Going into his age-25 season, I don't expect many teams to see Caboclo as a prospect with a lot of upside anymore, but could get offers at the minimum.
Cap Considerations
Caboclo will be an unrestricted free agent with a $1.6 million cap hold and Early Bird rights. Since the Rockets will only have his Early Bird rights, they will be limited to paying him a starting salary of up to 105% of the average salary this past season (roughly $10 million), which will be more than enough.
Teams other than the Rockets will have multiple ways to sign Caboclo as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer, or Room Mid-Level Exceptions to sign him. He could also likely be had at the minimum salary.
Potential Teams: Rockets, Trailblazers, Magic, Pelicans, Suns
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2 million ($50k guaranteed) with the Rockets
Actual Contract: 2-year, $4.3 million ($50k guaranteed) with the Rockets.
I nailed this one, with the only difference being a two-year minimum instead of a one-year minimum. Caboclo has a chance to make this squad, and could stay on as a small-ball center.
