Summary

Batum has essentially fallen out of the rotation for the Hornets, and would have a very dry market if he were to opt out. Batum is likely to be bought out sometime during the '20'-'21 season, and will hope to improve his market value with his new team before hitting free agency in 2021.

Cap Considerations

Batum has a player option for his $27.1 million salary in 2020-2021, and will be an unrestricted free agent with a $38.2 million cap hold and full Bird rights if he opts out. Let's not even waste time going over free agency hypotheticals. Batum is opting in.

Potential Teams: Hornets, Hawks, Pistons, Cavaliers, Knicks

Predicted Contract: Opt-In: $27.1 million

Actual Contract: Opt-In: $27.1 million

Batum opted in as expected. However, I didn't expect him to be waived by Charlotte, at least not until later in the season, but the Hornets needed the extra cap space to sign Gordon Hayward. Batum ended up signing a minimum deal with the Clippers.
