Summary
It has not been a good contract year for Augustin, as he lost is starting spot to Markelle Fultz. In addition, he only shot 35% from three after shooting 43% in the previous two seasons. Going into his age-32 season, Augustin is probably best suited to be a high-end backup point guard. Due to his age and role, teams will be hesitant to give him a long-term contract. However, Augustin's ability to hit shots makes him a valuable piece.
Augustin's best fit is next to a playmaking wing that he can spot up next two, and a wing that could guard the elite point guards in the league. The Magic's salary cap situation will cause them to have to make an interesting decision. Even if they let Augustin walk in free agency, the Magic will be over the cap, but will have the ability to retain Michael-Carter Williams as the backup to Fultz.
Cap Considerations
Augustin will be an unrestricted free agent with a $13.8 million cap hold and full Bird rights. The Magic will only be able to create cap space next summer if Augustin leaves, and Evan Fournier also opts out of his $17.2 million salary and leaves also. Therefore, the Magic are likely to be operating over the cap this offseason, which means they could use the full $9.3 million Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception to add players, then use Bird rights to re-sign Augustin. However, doing so could push them into the luxury tax.
If Augustin demands a starting salary of more than the full $9.3 million Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, only teams with cap space will be able to sign him. However, I expect Augustin's value to be under that amount, which would allow over the cap teams to pursue him.

Potential Teams: Pistons, Suns, Magic, Timberwolves, Heat
Predicted Contract: 2-year, $14 million with the Pistons
Actual Contract: 3-year, $21 million (3rd year non-guaranteed) with the Bucks

Augustin got similar money to what I expected, especially if you consider his third year is non-guaranteed. I did not expect the Bucks to be a suitor for Augustin, but after trading Eric Bledsoe and George Hill, they needed a backup point guard.
