Trier has a team option on his $3.5 million salary for next season, so there's a chance he doesn't become a free agent this summer. If the Knicks decline his option, Trier will be a restricted free agent with a $4.4 million Qualifying Offer, which would be an illogical move by New York since this is higher than his team option amount. So the likely scenario if the Knicks decline Trier's team option is that they don't tender Trier the Qualifying Offer, which would make him an unrestricted free agent.
The Knicks can still create two max slots without declining Trier's option, so if they decline his offer, it's either because they think they can bring him back at a lower number, or don't see Trier in their future plans. If the Knicks do decline his option to try and bring him back at a lower number, they may be burning a bridge that would cause Trier and his agent to look elsewhere.
Potential Teams: Grizzlies, Knicks, Nets, Mavericks, Cavs
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.5 million with the Grizzlies
*The Knicks excercised the team option on the final year of Trier's contract, so he did not hit free agency.
