Theis will have an interesting free agency this summer. While he hasn't proven to be worth more than a minimum contract, he might end up getting a little more than the minimum. In order to make Theis a restricted free agent, the Celtics will have to tender him a Qualifying Offer of $1.8 million, $200k more than his minimum salary. If they do not give him the Qualifying Offer, Theis will be an unrestricted free agent.
Since every dollar will count with the Celtics, as the luxury tax will be a concern, I do not expect Theis to get a Qualifying Offer, so Theis will likely have to settle for the minimum, whether it's with Boston or another team.
Potential Teams: Pelicans, Celtics, Raptors, Hornets, Spurs
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.6 million with the Pelicans
*Actual Contract: 2-year, $10 million (2nd year non-guaranteed) with the Celtics.
I was pretty far off on this one, as I expected Theis to be a minimum player or close to it.
