Portis has shown flashes of being a dynamic scorer, but he also has shown little else in his game, and has been injured for most of this season. The Wizards will be in a tough position, as they will likely want to retain Portis, but want to avoid the luxury tax and avoid having any more bad contracts on the books.

I don't expect another team to fall in love with Portis and give him a big offer, so his free agency could take a while. As the free agent market dries up, Portis may end up turning back to the Wizards as a last resort, who will have all the leverage over Portis (see Nerlens Noel and the Mavericks in 2017). The Wizards will then offer a long-term contract at a low number, and Portis will bet on himself and take the Qualifying Offer, hoping to do better in unrestricted free agency next summer.

Potential Teams: Wizards, Suns, Mavericks

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $3.6 million with the Wizards

*Actual Contract: 2-year, $30.8 million (2nd year team option) with the Knicks.

I thought Portis would get squeezed in restricted free agency, but luckily for him the Wizards had no real hopes of keeping him, so he was able to become unrestricted and sign with the Knicks. Even if I knew he was going to be an unrestricted free agent, I would not have expected Portis to get this much, but as they say - it only takes one.
