Payton had a nice start to the season before breaking his finger in November, and Payton never again played in a meaningful game as the Pelicans' season crumbled after Anthony Davis requested a trade that was never granted.
Statistically, Payton finished the season strong recording multiple triple doubles. However, I highly doubt any GM's will put much value on these performances. After his lack of shooting forced Payton to settle for a one-year, $3 million contract this summer, Payton could be looking at similar offers this summer.
Potential Teams: Pelicans, Hornets, Pistons
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $5 million with the Pelicans
*Actual Contract: 2-year, $16 million ($1 million guaranteed 2nd year) with the Knicks.
Payton got more money than I expected, and from a team I would not have expected. Despite having young point guards in Dennis Smith, Jr. and Frank Ntilikina, the Knicks signed Payton to a contract above his market value.
