For the early parts of the season, McGee was one of the best minimum-contract signings of the 2018 offseason. That turned, as the Lakers season did, but McGee could still turn his performance into a bigger contract this summer.

The Lakers could use some of their cap space to bring McGee back on an above-minimum contract, or they could use their cap space to bring in a max-free agent, and then re-sign McGee using the Room Mid-Level Exception of up to $4.76 million. Of course, there is also the possibility that McGee is not able to find any offers above the minimum.

Potential Teams: Lakers, 76ers, Mavericks, Knicks, Thunder

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.6 million ($1.6 million cap hit) with the Lakers

*Actual Contract: 2-year, $8.2 million (2nd year player option) with the Lakers.

I truly do not understand why the Lakers gave McGee significantly more than the minimum, including a player option on the second year. I would love to know who else was willing to give him an offer in that range.
