Dudley earned himself a 3-year, $30 million contract in 2016 to return to Phoenix, as the Suns hoped he would provide both shooting and veteran-leadership to the rebuilding squad. Once the Suns decided they were going to give all their minutes to young players, Dudley was traded to Brooklyn, where he has filled the exact role the Suns hoped he would when they signed him in 2016.
The former wing turned stretch-four (and even small-ball five, on occasion) has hit shots at a solid rate everywhere on the court except for the rim, which is fine because he hardly gets there. He makes the smart play on offense, and what he lacks in athleticism he makes up for with positional intelligence on the defensive end. He has also contributed to the culture that Kenny Atkinson has built for this surprising Nets team.
There may not be a high demand for Dudley at this stage of his career, but he has fit in well with the Nets and I would expect him to return. Nets, Rockets, Warriors, 76ers, Raptors
Potential Teams: Nets, Rockets, Warriors, 76ers, Raptor
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.6 million ($1.6 million cap hit) with the Nets
*Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.6 million ($1.6 million cap hit) with the Lakers.
Given his age and role, it was not surprising Dudley settled for the minimum. However, Dudley has shown he can still contribute, so he was one of the better minimum contracts signed this summer.
